Chapter Four

“Psst, Jorge. Don’t look now, but it’s Enemy No. 1,” Archer whispered and gave him a nudge. Jorge glanced up to see Mac approaching. He had fantasized, briefly, that maybe Mac wouldn’t remember what happened the night before. But when their gazes collided, he could see that had been wishful thinking.

“Dude, I said don’t look,” Archer added unhelpfully.

“Hey, George,” Mac drawled, smiling down at him. “Got a second for your favorite photographer?”

Archer snorted loudly, and when Jorge turned to glare, hurriedly got busy proofing a page. Jorge gestured at the other editors and page designers. “We’re on deadline.”

“It’ll only take a minute, but I guess we can talk here if you’d prefer. It’s about last night—”

Jorge jumped out of his chair, feeling every eye swivel to watch him. “Okay, yeah, if we’re gonna argue again, let’s take it to the conference room.” He glared at Mac in a way he hoped conveyed that he’d carve out his intestines if he made it obvious to the staff he’d had his lips on Jorge the night before.

He hurried down the hallway to a small conference room next to the break room. Mac stepped in behind him and closed the door. Jorge glanced at the door with a frown.

“I guess I owe you an apology for my apology.”

Jorge’s gaze shifted back to Mac. The man was biting at his lower lip nervously, and it was the cutest thing Jorge had ever seen. Do not be swayed by boyish charm, do not be swayed …

“Let’s just forget it,” Jorge said weakly. “You were drunk. I know you didn’t mean anything by it.”

“That’s not quite true,” Mac said, stepping closer, “And I don’t think I can just forget it.”

Jorge fell back a step, only to have Mac follow, then another step and another, until the wall brought him up short. “Why—” he swallowed nervously. “Why not?”

Last night, it had been easy to push Mac away. He’d been drunk and sloppy, and Jorge had been almost certain it was just the liquor making him horny. But now … now, Mac looked fresh and smelled delicious, like the earth after a fresh rain. He was dressed casually once more, but he made casual look damn good in a pair of jeans that fit him just right and a black T-shirt that darkened his hazel eyes. Jorge couldn’t remember a time he’d been so fascinated with someone’s eyes. And just now, those eyes were intently focused on Jorge, giving him the urge to squirm under the scrutiny.

Mac, despite closing in on Jorge’s personal space, stopped short of touching him. “I like you.”

“No, you don’t.” The contradiction came so quickly Jorge didn’t even think about the response. It was just fact: Mac despised him.

Mac grinned. “Yeah, I do.”

“No, you—” Mac put a finger to his lips, effectively shutting him up and ratcheting up his pulse at the same time.

“You’re gorgeous, and smart, and sexy.” Mac’s smile spread as Jorge’s eyes popped wide in surprise. “I seriously misjudged you when you started.
